The Bishops Stortford Platinum Jubilee Bake Off!

As the nation prepares to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th year as monarch this summer, we’re thrilled to announce a once-in-a-lifetime competition for bakers of all ages and abilities to create a special cake that we want to suggest to people to be served at street parties, official fundraisers and community events as a dedication to the Queen!

Bishop Stortford based Enable Independent are inviting applications from their local town and surrounding villages within a 20 mile radius and aged 8 and over to create the perfect Platinum Pudding/Cake recipe with the support of  our fabulous judges – Mike (Managing Director of Enable) Danielle from the South Street Pantry and editor Paul Winspear from our local newspaper – Bishop’s Stortford Independent.

To enter the competition, you need to submit your recipe, a photograph of your pudding/cake and a paragraph on why you think it would be the perfect dedication to the Queen via our competition entry form on our web-site.

The five finalists will be invited in with their creations to Enable Independent and the winner will be chosen by an independent judging panel led by Managing Director Mike Cooke at Enable Independent, our lovely editor Paul Winspear at the Bishops Stortford local Independent paper & Danielle from the South Street Pantry in Bishop’s Stortford.

If you, a friend, neighbour, colleague or family member have what it takes to create something fit for a queen, this is your chance to have some fun. The entry closing date is Friday, 27th of May!

What will I win?

The winner’s prize, besides the opportunity for your winning pudding to go down in history, if you’re the lucky winner you’ll be awarded:

Your very own engraved Bake off glass cake stand!

Enjoy our freshly made cakes at The South Street Pantry

The Judges & Criteria

What is the Judging Criteria?
We ask that the recipe fields be completed to the best of your ability.  This means filling out the recipe form in English and listing ingredients in metric measurements.  In addition, our judges are looking for a winning pudding that meets the following criteria:

It Tastes Just Right
While our judges won’t be able to taste everyone’s puddings, you do need to ensure the ingredients list is 100% accurate – even a degree of imprecision will affect the flavour. And of course, it should taste, well, delicious.

The final five finalists will then get the chance to bake their recipe and have them tasted by our expert panel of judges!

Perfect for Home Bakers
Your pudding needs to be easy enough for people everywhere to recreate at home! Try to use ingredients and kitchen equipment readily available to people all over the world, rather than fancy gadgets and rare flowers only grown in your back garden.

A Memorable Story
A good pudding/cake is made with passion and pride, so we’d love to hear the story behind your entry. Perhaps the recipe was inspired by Her Majesty The Queen’s life, has been handed down through the generations of your family, or recalls one of your own special memories.

Fit for The Queen
The proof of the pudding may be in the eating, but this one will need to look the part. A few final decorative flourishes always help – and make sure your photograph is nice and clear too for our judges to see your masterpiece in all its glory.

To enter please fill in the form below and don’t forget to add your photos! Closing date is Monday 16th May.

FAQ's

Steamed or baked, layered or rolled, a pie or crumble, a cake or tart, the Platinum Pudding Competition is open to interpretation.

Your recipe submission should be sweet. If in doubt, just imagine your recipe being served for afternoon tea or after the main course.

This competition is open to all individuals, families, school classes, community groups, companies and other entities. However, one lead entrant must be nominated and submit the entry on their behalf and for the purposes of the competition that nominated person shall be responsible for that submission.

The competition is open to all UK residents over the age of 8. While we know there are plenty of brilliant junior bakers out there, we still require parents or guardians of applicants between the ages of 8-17 years to complete the competition form on their behalf.

We all know that baking and cooking can be a hazardous (and messy!) affair whatever your age – but children over the age of 8 are able to be a bit more independent in the kitchen, and be more involved in prepping and planning too. Adult supervision is still recommended though.

Wednesday, 20th of April – Competition opens for entries

Friday 27th of May – Final day to submit your entry

Tuesday 31st of May - Judging commences by our 3 expert panel of judges to select the top 5 final entries

Absolutely! We encourage you to share tips, pointers, and images - our one request is that you include the hashtags #PlatinumPudding and #PlatinumJubilee

As the competition is open to entrants as young as 8 years of age, the competition is limited to amateur bakers.

Entrants must not (i) have any NVQ, BTEC and/or equivalent professional qualification in baking, cooking, food production, food preparation or catering (ii) be employed in a commercial organisation as a baker, cook or chef or (iii) have a livelihood that is derived from commercial baking or cooking.

The recipe will be shared on our social media pages and we will encourage people to make the recipe at home to enjoy with family, friends, and their local community
